SOPRA SOTTO is proud to represent the internationally acclaimed Fratelli ALINARI photographs and products in the USA.
Fratelli ALINARI was founded in Florence, Italy in 1852 and is the oldest firm in the world working in the field of photography. The birth of photography and the story of ALINARI go hand in hand in their development and growth. The ALINARI owned fund consists of 3,500,000 photographs collected in the ALINARI Archives and is continually growing with new acquisitions. In 1852 Leopoldo Alinari founded the photographic workshop with his brothers Giuseppe and Romualdo. It was the beginning of a unique endeavor that specialized in photographic portraiture, views of works of art and historical monuments, and achieved immediate national and international renown. An ALINARI photo guarantees a century of the art professional technology.
ALINARI is a point of reference in preserving and handing down through the photograph, the history, society, art and culture of Italy.
The ALINARI photographs are contact printed or enlarged from the original glassplate negatives housed in the Historic Archive. This manual technique of reproduction is the same used during the 19th century. It permits images of remarkable sharpness in any size. From the 21 x 27 cm (8.27" x 10.63") size of the negative, a contact print is inserted in a elegant passpartout.
The prints are made in black and white or they can be sepia toned. These faithful reproductions are printed on special photographic paper and manually created in order to offer a product that is of unique quality and prestige.
Our ALINARI photos are packaged with an acid free
board in a plastic sleeve that is both acid and lignin free.
